This course is designed for advanced students of journalism at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. The course assumes that students have a basic understanding of journalism as a practice. The objective of the course is to ensure that participants understand the basics of broadcast journalism and are able to effectively put together simple audio and video stories.

The focus of the course will be on principles of broadcast journalism – news gathering designed to capture audio and video apart from the usual reportorial craft of information gathering, fact checking and interviewing, writing for the ear to go with the audio and video, and putting these elements together in specific formats that are part of the broadcasting conventions of story-telling.

The course is designed to be practical using technologies easily accessible to students – mobile phones as recording devices with some additional devices for professional quality, use of relatively inexpensive or free software – and the output of the student work to be of a quality that is ready to broadcast on multiple platforms, especially social media.

The students will be expected to gather news, record audio and video, write broadcast copy and deliver stories. At the end of the course, each participant should have at least three audio and three video stories.
